5 really good roses to grow

Roses are a Great British Favourite, and no wonder – they are easy to grow, pretty tough and many of them keep flowering right through the summer. This week we’ve picked five really good ones that you might think about for your garden

Rosa 'Bonica'

This is a beautifully well-behaved rose for a beginner. Standing neatly and compactly at 3 to 4 foot high it repeat flowers from July to September in pretty, pink, scented trusses. A real mood-lifter, it's almost bomb-proof in regards to soil type and location, as long as it's not in the deepest shade all day.

Things we like:
  • compact size makes it ideal for a smaller garden

Rose 'Rhapsody in Blue'

Just adore this rose! It's a tall bushy variety with tight clusters of semi-double purply magenta flowers on light green healthy foliage. It's not really blue, but we'll forgive it because of its amazing flowering ability. Absolutely no surprise that it was awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit!

Things we like:
  • Its wonderful capacity for repeat flowering throughout the summer and on into autumn

Rose 'Champagne Moment'

This is a ridiculously pretty Floribunda rose with big clusters of lightly-scented creamy apricot flowers throughout the summer. The blooms last very well in a vase, and they look luminously lovely against the dark green healthy foliage.

Things we like:
  • Disease-resistance is very desirable in a rose, and this one has it in spades!

Rose 'Comte de Chambord'

If you like your roses to look and smell like the old-fashioned kinds, then this one is for you! It bears sheaves of light magenta flat quartered blooms - loaded with petals and perfume. It's part of a rose group called Portland roses and was bred in 1860, and the scent is just gorgeous

Things we like:
  • Unusually for an 'antique' rose, this one will repeat flower through the summer

Rose 'Rambling Rector'

'Rambling Rector' is a very big old rambling rose simply covered in sprays of small semi-double white flowers in summer backed by grey-green foliage. It obviously needs a lot of room to look its best, but when in bloom, it will honestly take your breath away!

Things we like:
  • Not only is it a wonderful sight when in flower, but the scent is also intoxicating
