Great Plants this Month Autumn

Fuchsia ‘Delta’s Sara’

This has been the perfect autumn for fuchsias because these trusty plants like it cool and damp. I purchased five plug plants of ‘Delta’s Sara’ 18 months ago and initially they took a while to get their toes stuck in and I began to wonder if I’d bought a dud. However, after a slow start, this year they’ve really come into their own.

Recently introduced from the Netherlands (one of its parents being the beautiful F. ‘Hawkshead’), this fuchsia has proved to be fully hardy and strong growing. It is upright in habit (to approx 1m) with gently arching stems that bear large, white and bluey-purple, semi-double flowers; these are exceptionally plentiful. The outer petals are in fact sepals and they are particularly prominent and showy. Probably happiest in partial shade, it is otherwise unfussy and easy to please but I would always add a bit of organic matter/leaf mould at planting time as fuchsias love these conditions.

November is not a month that encourages gentle strolls around the garden so make sure that any fuchsias are planted somewhere you will be able to appreciate them without having to get out the wellies. Either that or find a good, decent sized container, then you can place your fuchsia exactly where you’ll best enjoy it. They’re hard to beat at this time of the year.

Thompson & Morgan sell Fuchsia ‘Delta’s Sara’. If you buy it via this link it won’t affect the price you pay but The3Growbags will get a small commission to help with running costs.

Hi Sue, Elaine here. Thank you for writing in – gardening half an acre at the age of 83 sounds like a huge undertaking to me! We are very glad to hear that you already use some of these recycling ideas – we gardeners can be quite imaginative when we need to be, can’t we. I hope that you will still enjoy your hours in the garden (in spite of the slog) for a long time to come. All the best from all three of us.

Thank you, Gloria! Elaine here. We love getting messages like yours – it makes the work and the tech of putting the blog together each week, all so much easier when we know that our followers really appreciate what we’re doing. Long may it continue! All the best from all three of us.

Magic eraser stain remover sponge from ecozone clean old plant labels in seconds. Water activated they are brilliant anywhere in the house and just gradually disintegrate. Jos
